Thank You, You Preached Well

Fifteen years ago, July 18, Patty, me, and the girls began our journey as the "Pastor's Family" at Snow Hill. My pastor growing up, Brother Justice, eschewed surprises. He liked to know what was coming and going on. My mentor, Dr. Rick Davis, taught that it was a good idea to keep abreast of things. Surprises can sometimes go south on you. Not so here.

Yesterday, you surprised us. The ploy was not to cover an unprepared pastor. Instead, you preached the message. While many of the words spoken directed attention to some aspect of our time at Snow Hill, the underlying theme for me was the kind of relationship the Apostle Paul described in a number of places in the Scriptures - a loving, growing, mutual relationship of integrity and respect founded on the response to the love of God in Jesus, the Christ and the activity of the Spirit in the life of the Church.

Patty and I will look forward to our trip. The time away will be fun. New places are always intriguing and exciting. We are different because of our time together and the love we share with you.

Thank you Snow Hill.
We still thank God for allowing us to serve with you in the greatest church in the Country.

Justice Now

Jnow_08_back In about 48 hours our youth will spend a few days thinking about "living justly." Brad developed a solid event focused on helping youth consider ways to think about following Jesus with a sensibility toward others. Rachael Hurt, a World Vision artist, will lead worship and Sally Rymer will share her work as founder of Clapham Sect Phase 2. At 16 Sally considers it a call from God to make folks aware of and work to rid the world of modern day slavery.

Friday evening Rachael will be in concert at 8 p.m. Everyone is invited to share in this part of the event.

Book Fair Results

Jeff informed us we had another successful "Book Fair." We raised nearly $1000 toward purchases for our reading room. You donated another nearly $200 for gifts to those who we serve in our Wednesdays Are For Others. Great job!

We need to say a special thanks to Jeff for organizing the event and continuing to develop our Childrens' Reading Room.

We have heard rumblings of a fall event. Keep watching.

Youth Ministry on The Hill

Bradberryhill_000Late last summer Nathan shared with us the passion God had given him for our "Wednesdays Are for Others." His announcement began a transition in his leadership here at Snow Hill. After more than five years serving as our Youth Minister, he would move to become our Associate Pastor for Community Ministries.

You never replace people. You fill positions. Since, in this unique move of the Spirit, Nathan would continue with us he helped transition through about November when he gave his attention to our Food Pantry, Clothes Closet, After School Program and working toward the opening (soon we hope) of our Free Medical Clinic more fully.

We elected a "Search Committee" and trusted them with listening to God amidst our needs for a new person to lead our student ministry. Last month our Committee voted unanimously to invite Brad Berryhill to come for a weekend to see if we would agree on the leadership of the Spirit regarding his coming to Snow Hill. He agreed and will be here May 31-June 1. The schedule of events for the weekend include a time to meet Brad on Saturday morning, a cookout with our students, preaching on Sunday morning, and a time for hear from Brad and share in a conversation about student ministry.

Pray for this weekend. Plan to be here. Hear from God. Let's see where God takes us as we minister to students together.

Senior Recognition

Graduationinvitation1jpg We wait for those special moments. From early on our hopes are to move to the next "level" in our development most often marked by "graduations." The students we will honor Sunday graduated from Kindergarten looking forward to Elementary School. Once completing the fifth grade - some consider Intermediate School - attention turns toward Middle School or Junior High. Then with the intensity of middle adolescence pressing them on students cannot wait to drive much less graduate from High School. All our experiences lead us toward the next step which really leads to young adulthood.

Every step of the way we have walked with most of these students - we are part of their family. Together we will honor and encourage them on their continued journey through life trusting Jesus, following in His steps, living his life.

Garage Sale to Benefit Jan Smith

Hopefully you have been keeping up with Jan by reading her blog. You will find a link in the right sidebar of our website. Our continued conviction that we travel this journey with Jan and Gerald, not simply watching them, will be illustrated in our hosting a Benefit Garage Sale for Jan this week. Beginning tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and continuing until 5:00 p.m. each day through Saturday the doors will be open. Invite your friends. Stop by yourself. Looking forward to seeing you!

Welcome

  • Jesus came preaching the present realities of the Kingdom of God - "is at hand." led all who would to experience life in the Kingdom. The kind of life runs counter to the systems and powers governing our present social order. In Jesus' Kingdom the poor are rich, the hungry filled and the thirsty fed. Justice in the Kingdom sets right what is wrong. Come follow Jesus with us. If you live in the Tri-City area and find your life in need of being set to rights, come trust Jesus with us.
